Afrikaans alternative artist Hendriek Bleik has been on our radar for a while now. He presents a very interesting sound, mixing bedroom pop sensitivities with touches of indie-rock and bold verse.
And now, he’s venturing into boom-bap (crazy, right?) on his brand new single “Bomskok” — a punchy rap offering featuring longtime friend and collaborator Mike R3ps, and Afrikaans music legend Jaco van der Merwe (of Bittereinder).
The track was also produced by Peach van Pletzen (also of Bittereinder), and his influence shows. There’s this bombastic, kinetic energy thrown all over “Bomskok” — imagining a world undone by humanity’s own hand.
With Mike R3ps’ almost industrial flow and Jaco Van Der Merwe’s trademark delivery, they lament modern lethargy alongside Bleik’s fresh genre approach.
And despite its weighty theme, “Bomskok” thumps with an infectious bounce. Old-school breakbeats meet contemporary Afrikaans lyricism, forging a fresh sonic hybrid that’s as danceable as it is thought-provoking.
“This track is special on so many levels,” says Bleik. “Working with Mike is like jamming with family. And collaborating with Jaco, whose music shaped my teenage years alongside Zinkplaat, is a true milestone. Peach’s production ties it all together, honouring our roots while pushing the boundaries of Afrikaans music.”
